Artist Biography

Born in Osaka, Japan, Maika Tokunaga began playing the saxophone at the age of 13. During her three years of high school, she was a member of the renowned concert band at Osaka Toin High School.

She graduated top of the wind instrument department from the Junior College Division of Osaka College of Music and was selected to perform at the university’s graduation concert.

Her accolades include:

• 3rd Prize (Highest Award) in the University & General Division of the 9th K Saxophone Competition (Video Screening Division)
• 1st Prize and the Dolce Award at the 7th Dolce Musical Instruments Ensemble Competition
• 2nd Prize (Highest Award) in the Ensemble Division of the 1st Autumn K Saxophone Competition (Video Screening)
• 3rd Prize in the Ensemble Division of the 25th Osaka International Music Competition
• 1st Prize in the Ensemble Division of the 11th Nagoya Saxophone Competition
• 2nd Prize in the 5th Fanny Mendelssohn International Online Competition

She has studied saxophone under Asako Inoue and Kazuyuki Hayashida.

Maika Tokunaga is currently the soprano saxophonist of the Le Ciel Saxophone Quartet. As a freelance musician, she is actively engaged in both performance activities and coaching concert bands at junior high and high schools.
